This post is just one example of how I came to that conclusion! One of my favorite...Loving books and ruining them! One of my favorite books as a child was a 1938 collection of Hans Christian Andersen stories translated by Paul Leyssac, that a grandmother had given me. The wonderfully graphic black and white illustrations were by Richard Bennett. But being the budding artist I've now become, I thought they'd be so much better in color. So I took my colored pencils and "finished the job". (I have to say I did it pretty well; I was probably fully old enough to have known better than to deface a beautiful book.) I don't know that either parental unit ever found out what I'd done, or would have really cared if they had. But - I - very quickly came to regret the act. I still have the book, and just a few years ago - close to forty years after "the crime" - I found another first edition, dust jacket and all, and bought it. I consider that my debt to society is now paid. : )Stephiliushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08562830870365561419noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4743631881054046577.post-60626701895622597022014-05-29T06:14:19.466-07:002014-05-29T06:14:19.466-07:00This is just a lovely post, and brings back memori...This is just a lovely post, and brings back memories of my own book-filled childhood. It makes me laugh to think of the child-version of you determined to erase those illustrations with a strange logic that seemed perfectly understandable at the time. I was VERY anal about my books and kept them in pristine condition.Forest City Fashionistahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04428940427287921203noreply@blogger.com
